1999 Dutch & American Police Denali Expedition Five climbers launched a June 1999 expedition to reach the summit of Denali. Denali is the native name for the 20,320 foot (6,194m) Mount McKinley, North America's highest peak. The international team consists of three Americans and three Dutch members. They are not glamorous professional explorers whose names and faces you'd recognize from adventure documentaries and magazine articles. Instead, the climbers are three police officers, a firefighter and a steel worker who share the same dream to challenge themselves in a world-class mountaineering experience. The Expedition Team:
Keith McPheeters plans this to be the first in what will become annual expeditions dedicated to police officers killed in the line of duty. The 1999 Denali Expedition is in honor of Cortez, Colorado Police Officer Dale Claxton, shot and killed on May 29, 1998 following a routine traffic stop. The incident resulted in a massive search for the three perpetrators who fled into the remote "four corners" border area of Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico. McPheeters was a member of a Farmington, New Mexico Police SWAT team assisting in the search.
